'Straight through' All-Ireland plan is rejected

NOVEMBER 1979

Wednesday November 04 2009

A SUGGESTION that they seek to have Kerry nominated straight through to the All-Ireland without playing a game in the Munster Football Championship was rejected at a meeting of the Kerry County Board, it being stated that such a move would only serve to antagonise some of the other counties in Munster.

Opening the discussion, Michael O'Connor, Munster Council representative, said that while Kerry won the vote 9-4 at a recent Munster Council meeting to allow Kerry play in the semi-finals of next year's Munster Championship they had not won a two-thirds majority of those delegates present and entitled to vote.

Mr. O'Connor said they could have a motion to Convention but they could forget about the 1980 championship. There was no way that could be changed. But if the County Board felt it was the best thing for Kerry and Munster they could have a motion for Convention in March 1980 stating that they would be prepared to have Kerry and Cork seeded in separate halves and have an open draw.
