THE people of Milltown thought their problems were ended when, about six months ago, a Gárda Sergeant moved in with his family.
Sergeant David McNamara had just been transferred from Knocknagashel and his arrival satisfied the town's desire for a resident Gárda presence.
But that came to an abrupt end recently when the sergeant's family moved to Tralee. Now Milltown has launched a campaign to have a resident Gárda and on Monday night a deputation met the Minister for Justice, Gerry Collins, TD, in Abbeyfeale.
Milltown is in the Castlemaine District, where Sergeant McNamara is stationed. The town has no Gárda barracks at present. whan the news of the latest development broke there was a growing feeling of unrest.
The resident Gárda presence in Milltown had wiped out disturbances, shouting and brawling which had been reported as common before Sergeant McNamara and family moved in. Now the residents are afraid that lawlessness will break out once more.
A staunch supporter of the present campaign is local Parish Priest, Father John Quane. He said that since he came to the parish the population had increased considerably.
Dr. Eamonn Sheehan, local medical officer and coroner for West Kerry, also supports the campaign . the support lobby also includes the Rector of Kilcoleman, Rev. Malcom Shannon.
Arrangements for the meeting with the justice minister were made by the Chairman of the Milltown Community Council, Father Michael Lucid, CC.
