In a town dominated by award winning restaurants, in a short space of time An Canteen has garnered quite a reputation for itself with its delicious, inventive and supremely fresh home cooking.
Most surprising of all however is the price; with an amazing menu, the team at An Canteen have done their very best to keep the prices at a minimum for the customer without compromising on taste.
The menu has been developed to incorporate the best local ingredients as well; open from 12-9pm daily you can choose from a delicious lunch menu or delectable evening meal at any time of the day. At the weekends, An Canteen is open from 9am serving their famous Full Irish Breakfast hot off the griddle from 9am-12pm.
An Canteen is the brain-child of brothers Niall and Brian Ó Conchúir, two native Irish-speakers from Ballyferriter with a passion for good food. " An Canteen is all about using the finest and freshest local produce and ingredients" explained front-of-house manager Brian, " we wanted to create a place where people could enjoy good food at a reasonable price."
Chef Niall, who steers the ship from the kitchen, is careful about the foods he selects for An Canteen, only purchasing the best local in-season meat, fish and vegetables. This way there is no overstocking, no bulk buying, no packet sauces; An Canteen is the real deal.
They even bake their own breads using delicious ingredients such as goat's cheese and fresh olives. It says a lot about them as culinary innovators: they also sell the bread so if you fancy a slice of something absolutely delicious just pop in the night before and they will bake a loaf freshly for you that can be picked up the following day.
An Canteen is cosy, intimate and inviting; nestled in the quaint and picturesque Dykegate Lane it offers the perfect place to unwind from the stresses of life. Seating up to 30 people in the main restaurant, there is also a beautiful courtyard area to the back of the restaurant. Just imagine sipping a glass of wine, chatting with friends while tucking into a hearty roast or some fresh fish as the sun goes down over Dingle Bay…
Niall and Brian are well equipped to cater for groups at An Canteen and with many of their main courses under € 14 and a starter menu ranging in price from € 5, An Canteen is ' the' place to enjoy great food at a great price.
Best of all, they run the same menu all day; the prices do not increase after 6pm. There is no early bird menu; all of An Canteen's patrons catch the proverbial worm so to speak!
Some of An Canteen's inspiration is owed to Gareth Smith from Dublin eatery 1014, the award winning charity restaurant in Clontarf. His insight, combined with Niall and Brian's passion for good food has helped create something truly unique, something that Dingle and West Kerry has been crying out for.
An Canteen is located next door to the Hideout Hostel on Dykegate Lane.
" We would like to thank the proprietor of Hideout Hostel, Michael Begley for all his support and to all our family and friends who have helped us make An Canteen a reality" said Niall, "without their help we would not have succeeded in this venture."
"We would also like to thank all our customers for their support to date and the great feedback we have received."
