THE talented members of Abbeyfeale Drama Group will take to the stage at their local GAA clubhouse this Thursday night, kicking off a sixnight run of John B Keane's play, The Buds of Ballybunion.
While humorous and whimsical at times, the play acts as a historical document capturing a place and people that were soon to be no more, according to actor and director, Dick Woulfe.
The 'Buds', he explained, were a group of country people who came to Ballybunion, bringing with them their own food to their own lodgings. On the surface, they appear to be a homogenous gathering with simple tastes in life, but there is much more to them than meets the eye, with complicated stories of repressed feelings, troublesome in-laws and secret lovers.
"It's a highly enjoyable play and a good antidote to the recessionary stories that bombard us each day," said Dick, who is both directing and acting in the production, playing the part of Moon.
The play kicks off this Thursday, February 16 at the GAA club in Abbeyfeale, with further performances on February 18, 19, 21, 23 and 25.
